The ryokan staff were both attractive as well as attentive and responsive to our many and varied requests. Location is excellent, within short and leisurely walking distance of nearby tourist attractions of shrines & temples, of parks and open spaces, of quaint cobbled street souvenir shops and eateries, on modern city districts and busy thoroughfares. Bus stops were well within reach that afford ease of travelling to attractions farther afield. Once in a lifetime experience of a Maiko Kaiseki Dinner Show, and the use of the ryokan public bath is not to be missed.

It's our first time in Kyoto and we were lucky to pick Gion Hatanaka for our stay. The ryokan was clean, well maintained and had a really nice public bath. It's our first time in Kyoto and we were lucky to pick Gion Hatanaka for our stay. The ryokan was clean, well maintained and had a really nice public bath. The service was exceptional and we really enjoyed the kaiseki and full japanese breakfast. But be forewarned, it's a tonne of food. We were a family of four and our girls enjoyed this Ryokan more than any of our hotels in Japan.

It’s a very nice place if you don’t mind spending a bit. Service is excellent and the Kaiseki meals are works of art, although such traditional Japanese cuisine can be an acquired taste for the western palate (e.g. it’s very different to Japanese food we eat back home in Australia). It’s a very nice place if you don’t mind spending a bit. Service is excellent and the Kaiseki meals are works of art, although such traditional Japanese cuisine can be an acquired taste for the western palate (e.g. it’s very different to Japanese food we eat back home in Australia). My family spent 2 nights at Gion Hatanaka and 2 nights at MIMARU in Kyoto, to mix and match as we wanted to try other restaurants in Kyoto.

We stayed for a night and also had the kaiseki dinner and breakfast option, the meals where generous and delicious. We also had maiko show for our dinner which was a lovely experience for those that haven't tried. The location is convenient for all the surrounding temples and Gion's attractions and a 10-15min walk to the main street and downtown area.
